Follow these simple steps to make delicious, fluffy Spanish rice quickly. This recipe uses common ingredients for an authentic flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Add the rice to the saucepan and stir constantly for 2 to 3 minutes until the grains turn slightly opaque. This toasts the rice.
  4. Stir in the chicken broth, tomato sauce, cumin, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan tightly, and simmer for 20 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it stand, covered, for 10 minutes.
  7. Fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, substitute half the chicken broth with water and add one bouillon cube.
  • If you do not have tomato sauce, use 1/2 cup tomato puree mixed with 1/4 cup water.
  • Do not lift the lid during the 20-minute simmering time to keep the steam trapped for fluffy rice.
