You can make fresh, tangy tartar sauce at home faster than you can drive to the store. This easy recipe is the perfect creamy dipping sauce for fried fish, crab cakes, or fries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup good quality mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped dill pickles or sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients. You want everything ready so you can mix this quickly.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the mayonnaise, chopped pickles or relish, chopped capers, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard.
  3. Add the black pepper and a pinch of salt, if you are using it.
  4. Stir all the ingredients together until they are completely combined and the sauce looks uniform.
  5. Taste the sauce. If you want it tangier, add a few more drops of lemon juice.
  6. Cover the bowl and chill the tartar sauce in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This lets the flavors blend together.
  7. Serve this fresh tartar sauce with your favorite seafood or use it as a zesty condiment.

Notes

  • For a lower-carb option, use dill relish instead of sweet relish.
  • If you want a slightly thinner sauce, add one teaspoon of pickle brine or water until you reach your desired consistency.
  • This homemade tartar sauce tastes best when made ahead, allowing the pickles and capers to infuse the mayonnaise base.
  • This recipe makes a classic sauce for fried fish, but it is also excellent on sandwiches or as a dip for fries.
