Make decadent, restaurant-style stuffed French toast featuring a sweet cream cheese filling and fresh strawberries.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 thick slices brioche or challah bread
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, thinly sliced
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon zest until smooth. This is your filling.
  2. Take four slices of bread. Spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly over one side of each slice.
  3. Arrange half of the sliced strawberries over the cream cheese on those four slices.
  4. Top each with the remaining four slices of bread, creating four sandwiches. Gently press the edges together.
  5. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  6. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides completely. Do not soak; move quickly.
  7. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  8. Cook the stuffed sandwiches for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and the filling is warm. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
  9. Slice the French toast in half diagonally before serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier exterior, you can bake the cooked French toast at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes after pan-frying.
  • If you prefer a sweeter strawberry component, lightly macerate the sliced strawberries with 1 tablespoon of sugar for 10 minutes before assembling.
  • Use thick-cut bread, about 3/4 inch thick, for the best structure when stuffing.
