Ingredients
Scale
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 cup water or milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1 tablespoon butter or oil
1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Black pepper to taste
Instructions
Cook the oatmeal: Combine oats, water or milk, and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until creamy.
Fry the egg: While the oatmeal cooks, heat butter or oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Crack the egg into the skillet and cook to your desired doneness (sunny-side up, over-easy, etc.).
Assemble: Pour the cooked oatmeal into a bowl.
Top with cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the hot oatmeal and let it melt.
Add the egg: Carefully place the fried egg on top of the oatmeal and cheese.
Season: Sprinkle with black pepper to taste.
Notes
You can use quick oats for a faster cooking time, but rolled oats provide a better texture for this savory dish.
Feel free to add other seasonings like garlic powder or onion powder to the oatmeal for extra flavor.
For a richer flavor, use milk instead of water to cook the oatmeal.
