Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced (about 1 1/2 cups)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for swirl)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the 2 cups of flour, baking soda, salt, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the buttermilk to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the dry mixture. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Fold in the diced apples gently.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon for the swirl.
  7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the batter. Top with the remaining batter.
  8. Use a knife to gently swirl the layers once or twice for a marbled effect.
  9. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. If the top browns too quickly, loosely tent it with foil after 40 minutes.
  10. Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Whisk together the powdered sugar and milk to create a thin glaze. Drizzle over the cooled bread before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith for the best texture and flavor balance.
  • For an extra moist result, ensure your buttermilk is at room temperature before mixing.
  • You can substitute sour cream for buttermilk if needed, using the same 1/2 cup measurement.
