Ingredients
Scale
1 pound breakfast sausage
1 loaf of white bread, cubed
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
6 large eggs
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Hollandaise sauce, for serving (optional)
Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Cook the breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until crumbled and browned. Drain off any excess grease.
Spread the cubed bread in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer half of the toasted bread cubes, half of the cooked sausage, and half of the Swiss cheese.
Repeat the layers with the remaining bread, sausage, and cheese.
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole.
Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the casserole uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown, and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Serve warm, with hollandaise sauce and fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
You can use other types of bread like challah or sourdough for a different flavor.
Feel free to add cooked spinach or ham to the casserole for extra flavor and texture.
For a richer casserole, you can use half-and-half instead of milk.
If you don’t have time to make hollandaise sauce, a simple drizzle of melted butter or a dollop of sour cream can also be delicious.
