Ingredients
Scale
3 pounds apples (like Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp)
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
Instructions
Wash your apples. You do not need to peel them for this easy recipe.
Core the apples and cut them into roughly 1-inch chunks.
Place the apple chunks, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice (if using) into a large pot or Dutch oven.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
The apples are done when they are very tender and easily mashable with a fork.
Remove the pot from the heat. If you prefer smooth applesauce, use an immersion blender or carefully transfer the mixture to a standard blender and process until smooth. For chunky applesauce, mash the apples lightly with a potato masher or fork directly in the pot.
Taste the homemade applesauce. If you want more spice, stir in a little extra cinnamon.
Serve the applesauce warm or chill it completely before serving as a natural sweetener snack or side dish.
Notes
For a sweeter result without added sugar, choose naturally sweet apples like Fuji or Gala.
This recipe is freezer-friendly; cool completely before storing in airtight containers for up to three months.
If you prefer a thinner consistency, add water, one tablespoon at a time, while mashing or blending.
