Ingredients
Scale
2 pounds ripe peaches, peeled, pitted, and chopped
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Combine chopped peaches, sugar, and water in a large pot.
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until peaches are very soft, about 20-30 minutes.
Mash the peaches with a potato masher or use an immersion blender for a smoother consistency.
Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Continue to simmer, stirring frequently, until the mixture has thickened to your desired consistency, about another 30-60 minutes. The peach butter should be thick enough to hold its shape on a spoon.
Ladle the hot peach butter into clean jars, leaving about 1/4 inch headspace.
Wipe the rims of the jars clean and screw on the lids.
Process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes, or until the lids are sealed.
Let cool completely before storing in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place.
Notes
For a smoother peach butter, you can blend the cooked peaches before simmering them down further.
Adjust the sugar and spices to your taste.
If you don’t have ripe peaches, frozen peaches can also be used. Thaw them completely before starting.
Peach butter can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or frozen for longer storage.
