A simple recipe for flaky strawberry cream cheese danishes, perfect for a fast breakfast or a sweet dessert treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14.1 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup strawberry preserves or jam
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon milk or water (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into 9 equal squares (you should have 18 squares total).
  4. Place the squares on the prepared baking sheets. Using a sharp knife, lightly score a border about 1/2 inch from the edge of each square, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  5. Spread about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture inside the scored border of each pastry square.
  6. Top the cream cheese with about 1 teaspoon of strawberry preserves over the center of the cream cheese mixture.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and 2 tablespoons of milk to create an egg wash. Brush the edges (the border) of each pastry lightly with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed and golden brown.
  9. While the danishes cool slightly, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk or water to create a thin glaze.
  10. Drizzle the glaze over the warm danishes before serving.

Notes

  • For a faster breakfast, you can prepare the cream cheese filling the day before and store it in the refrigerator.
  • If you want a fresher strawberry taste for dessert, mix 1/2 cup of finely diced fresh strawberries into the preserves before topping the pastries.
  • These freeze well after baking; cool completely, place in an airtight container, and reheat briefly in a toaster oven for crispness.
