This recipe delivers a truly classic, old fashioned custard pie with a smooth, creamy vanilla filling and a warm nutmeg topping. It is a simple, comforting dessert perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, plus extra for topping
  • 2 cups whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Place your unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs lightly. Do not over-whisk; you want to avoid incorporating too much air.
  3. Add the sugar, salt, vanilla extract, and 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg to the eggs. Whisk until just combined.
  4. Gently warm the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until small bubbles form around the edges. Do not let it boil.
  5. Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly. This tempering step prevents the eggs from scrambling.
  6. Pour the custard mixture into the unbaked pie shell.
  7. Sprinkle a light, even layer of extra ground nutmeg over the top of the filling.
  8. Carefully place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any potential drips. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. The pie is done when the edges are set and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean, or when the center jiggles only slightly like gelatin.
  9. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing. This allows the custard to fully set.
  10. Chill the pie for at least 2 hours before serving for the best texture.

Notes

  • For a truly traditional southern custard pie experience, use a homemade, flaky pie crust.
  • If you are worried about the crust edges browning too quickly, cover them loosely with aluminum foil halfway through baking.
  • This creamy dessert pie tastes best when served cold or slightly chilled.
