Make rich, decadent French toast stuffed with a sweet, creamy cheese filling, pan-fried until golden brown.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick-cut brioche or challah bread
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Assemble the sandwiches: Take one slice of bread and spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly over one side. Top with a second slice of bread to form a sandwich. Repeat with the remaining bread and filling.
  3. Mix the egg wash: In a shallow dish, whisk together the egg, milk, cinnamon, and salt until combined.
  4. Dip the sandwiches: Quickly dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated but not overly saturated.
  5. Cook the toast: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place two sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown and the filling is warm. Add more butter as needed between batches.
  6. Serve immediately: Dust the cooked stuffed French toast with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Use thick bread like brioche or Texas toast; thin bread may tear when stuffed.
  • Do not oversoak the bread in the egg mixture; a quick dip is enough.
  • For extra flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of lemon zest to the cream cheese filling.
