Make this easy, one-pan cheesy ground beef pasta dish right on the stovetop. It cooks quickly and finishes with a layer of melted mozzarella cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni or small pasta shape
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with their juice), beef broth, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Add the dry pasta to the skillet. Stir well to submerge the pasta in the liquid.
  6. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and simmer for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Remove the skillet from the heat. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the pasta mixture.
  8. Cover the skillet again for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the residual heat to melt the cheese completely.
  9. Serve directly from the skillet.

Notes

  • Use 90% lean ground beef or higher to reduce the amount of fat you need to drain.
  • For a creamier texture, stir in 1/4 cup of cream cheese or heavy cream after the pasta is cooked but before adding the mozzarella.
  • You can substitute Italian seasoning with a mix of dried basil and oregano.
