Make warm, comforting apple dumplings quickly using refrigerated crescent roll dough and a simple, buttery brown sugar glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 refrigerated crescent roll dough sheets
  • 2 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and halved
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. Unroll the crescent roll dough sheets. Separate them into individual triangles. Do not separate the perforations if using standard sheets.
  3. Place one apple half near the wide end of a dough triangle. Fold the dough over the apple, wrapping it completely, and pinch the seams closed to seal. Place the wrapped apple seam-side down in the prepared baking dish. Repeat with the remaining apples and dough.
  4. In a small saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves completely, about 3 minutes. Do not boil.
  5. Pour the warm glaze evenly over the wrapped apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork.
  7. Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving warm, spooning extra glaze from the bottom of the pan over each dumpling.

Notes

  • If you prefer a tangier apple, use Granny Smith apples. For a sweeter result, use Honeycrisp or Fuji.
  • You can substitute the water in the glaze with 1/2 cup of Mountain Dew or ginger ale for a different flavor profile.
  • For extra richness, add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the glaze mixture just before pouring it over the dumplings.
